                        Blackle is a website powered by Google Custom Search  which aims to save energy by displaying a black background and using grayish-white font color for search results. Blackle claims having saved 3.12 MWh of electrical energy up to now....



                       The concept behind Blackle is that computer monitors can be made to use less energy by displaying much darker colors. Blackle is based on a study which tested a variety of CRT and LCD monitors. There is dispute over whether there really are any energy saving effects, especially for users of LCD screens, where there is a constant back light, while pixel shaders are used to display various colors.

વાત IBM ની...............

વાત IBM ની :
આજે ૩,૮૮,૦૦૦ માણસોનો સ્ટાફ ધરાવતી કંપનીએ ૧૦૦ વરસ પૂરા કર્યા. આ ૧૦૦ વર્ષમા કંપનીને પાંચ નોબલ પ્રાઈસ મળ્યા.

૧૯૧૧ મા ચાર કંપનીએ ભેગા મળી, CTR નામની કંપનીની સ્થાપના કરી. CTR એટલે Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation. એ વખતે કંપનીમા ૧૩૦૦ માણસોનો સ્ટાફ હતો.

૧૯૨૪ માં CTR નામ બદલી કરી, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) નામ અપનાવ્યું. એ જ વર્ષે, કંપનીએ પહેલું ઈલેક્ટ્રીક પંચકાર્ડ મશીન બનાવ્યું. ૧૯૨૮ સુધીમા એમા ઘણા સુધારા કરી, એક રીતે પંચકાર્ડ કોમપ્યુટરનો પાયો નાખ્યો.

૧૯૩૦મા વિશ્વભરમા ભયંકર મંદી આવી. આ કારમી મંદી પાંચ વર્ષ સુધી ચાલી. અમેરિકામાં કેટલીએ કંપનીઓ બંધ પડી ગઈ. બીજી કેટલીએ કંપનીઓમા પચાસ ટકાથી વધારે માણસોને છૂટા કરવામા આવ્યા. લાખો લોકો બેરોજગાર થઈ ગયા. આવા સમયમા પ્રેસીડેન્ટ રૂઝવેલ્ટના National Recovery Administration plan ને માન આપી, IBM કંપનીએ એક પણ માણસને છૂટો ન કર્યો, એટલું જ નહિં, નવી ભરતીઓ કરી અને સ્ટાફના benefits મા વધારો કર્યો. વેચાણના અભાવે તૈયાર માલનો ખૂબ ભરોવો થતો હતો, છતાં કંપનીએ મંદી સામેની લડત ચાલુ રાખી. આમા આખરે જીત તો કંપનીની જ થઈ.

૧૯૩૫ મા અમેરિકન સરકારે Social Security Act of 1935 દાખલ કર્યો ત્યારે એને અમલમા લાવવા અને ૨,૬૦,૦૦,૦૦૦ માણસોના રેકોર્ડ તૈયાર કરવા, જે મશીનોની જરૂર હતી, તે મશીનોનો આટલો મોટો સ્ટોક IBM સિવાય કોઈની પાસે ન હતો.

હકીકતમા આ મંદી દરમ્યાન, ૧૯૩૧ મા, IBM 600 નામનું પહેલું alphabetical accounting machine બનાવ્યું. આ મશીન માટે પહેલીવાર ન્યુયોર્કના છાપાઓમા Super Computing Machine શબ્દનો ઉપયોગ થયો. આ મશીન એટલું મોટું હતું કે એનું હુલામણું નામ Packard રાખવામા આવ્યું.

૧૯૩૩મા કંપનીએ Electric typewriter attached to a radio transmitter બનાવ્યું. આની મદદથી રોજના પાંચ કરોડ શબ્દો ૧૧૦૦૦ માઈલ દૂર મોકલી શકાતા. અમેરિકી સેનાને આ ખૂબ ઉપયોગી થયું.
૧૯૩૪માં IBM 801 બનાવીને એમણે બેંકોનું ચેક કલીઅરન્સનું કામ ઘણું સરળ કરી દીધું. ૧૯૩૭માં “ઓન લાઈન ટેસ્ટ” માટે IBM 805 Test Scoring Machine બનાવીને કંપનીએ પરીક્ષા લેવાની પધ્ધતિ બદલી નાખી.
૧૯૩૯મામ બીજું વિશ્વયુધ્ધ શરૂ થયું. કંપનીએ પોતાની બધી શક્તિ અમેરિકાની સરકારને સમર્પિત કરી દીધી. કંપનીએ બંદૂકો અને યુધ્ધની સામગ્રી બનાવવાનું શરૂ કરી દીધું, આસરે ૭૦ વસ્તુઓનું ઉત્પાદન કર્યું અને આ બધું ફક્ત એક ટકો નફો રાખીને. આ નફામાંથી પણ યુધ્ધમા માર્યા ગયેલા સૈનિકોની વિધવાઓ અને બાળકોના લાભાર્થે મોટી રકમ દાનમા આપી.
એટમ બોમ્બ બનાવવાના Manhattan Project મા, કંપનીના Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator મશીનનો મોટો ફાળો હતો. ૧૯૪૪મા નેવી માટે Harvard Mark I કોમપ્યુટર બનાવી, કંપનીએ નેવીને બળવાન બનાવ્યું.
વિશ્વયુધ્ધની સમાપ્તિબાદ કંપનીએ કોમપ્યુઅટરો બનાવવા ઉપર ધ્યાન કેંદ્રિત કર્યું. ૧૯૪૬મા IBM 603 Electronic Multiplier બનાવ્યું. પહેલીવાર વેક્યુમ ટ્યુબસનો ઉપયોગ કરી, મશીનને ખૂબ સ્પીડમા કામ કરતું કરી દીધું. ૧૯૪૮મા ૧૨૦૦૦ વેક્યુમ ટ્યુબસ વાપરી SSEC નામનું એવું કોમપ્યુટર બનાવ્યું, જેમા પ્રોગ્રામમા ફેરફાર કરી શકાય. ૧૯૫૦મા intercontinental missiles છોડવા અને ટ્રેક કરવા માટેના કોમપ્યુટર બનાવ્યા, જેમા પ્રથમ ચંદ્રયાન માટેના રોકેટનો પણ સમાવેશ થાય છે. કંપનીએ NASA ના મુખ્ય સહયોગી અને સપ્લાયર તરીકેનું સ્થાન અંકે કર્યું.
૧૯૫૨મા IBM કંપનીએ કોમપ્યુઅટર બનાવનારી કંપનીઓમાં પ્રથમ સ્થાન મેળવ્યું. Storage માટે magnetic tape નો ઉપયોગ કરી કોમપ્યુઅટરની કીમત કાબુમા રાખવામા સફળતા મેળવી.
૧૯૫૪મા અમેરિકન એરફોર્સે IBMને SAGE નામના એક ખૂબ જ શક્તિશાળી કોમપ્યુઅટર બનાવવાનું કામ સોંપ્યું. કંપનીએ ૫૬ SAGE બનાવ્યા, પ્રત્યએકની કીમત ત્રણ કરોડ ડોલર હતી. આ કામ કરવા ૭૦૦૦ માણસોની જરૂર પડી હતી.

એજ વર્ષે Naval Ordnance Research Computer (NORC) બનાવ્યું, એ જમાનાનું એ સૌથી ફાસ્ટ અને પાવરફૂલ કોમપ્યુટર હતું.
૧૯૫૬ મા કંપની પ્રથમ magnetic hard disk બજારમા મૂકી. આ જ વર્ષે IBM 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) નામનું જંગી કોમપ્યુટર બનાવ્યું, જેમા ૫૦ નંગ બે ફૂટ ડાયામીટરની હાર્ડ ડીસ્ક હતી. તે વખતે ૧ એમબી કેપેસીટી સ્ટોર કરવાનો ખર્ચ ૧૦,૦૦૦ ડોલર હતો, જે ઘટીને ૧૯૯૭મા ખર્ચ માત્ર ૧૦ સેંટ થઈ ગયો.
૧૯૫૭ મા FORTRAN (Formula Translator) નામની પ્રોગ્રામ લખવાની ભાષા દાખલ કરી, કંપનીએ કોમપ્યુટરની દુનિયામા ક્રાન્તિ લાવી દીધી.
૧૯૫૮ મા SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) બનાવીને અમેરિકાની હવાઈ સુરક્ષા તાકાત વધારી દીધી.
૧૯૫૯ મા IBM 1401 બનાવીને કંપનીએ આજની કક્ષાના કોમપ્યુટરો જેવું Main Frame Computer બનાવ્યું, જે ૧૯૬૦ના દાયકાનું ખૂબ લોકપ્રિય કોમપ્યુટર હતું. IBM 1403 નામનું high-volume પ્રિન્ટર પણ બનાવ્યું, જેની બરોબરી ૧૯૭૦ સુધી બીજું કોઈ કરી શક્યું નહિં.
૧૯૬૦ થી ૧૯૬૮ ની વચ્ચે દુનિયામા આઠ મોટી કંપનીઓ કોમપ્યુટર બનાવતી આમા IBM નો ફાળો ૭૦ ટકા હતો. લોકો મજાકમા "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", કહેતા.
૧૯૬૧ મા 7030 Stretch supercomputer બનાવ્યું, ૧૯૬૨ મા એરલાઈનના રીઝર્વેશન માટે SABRE reservation system બનાવ્યું, ૧૯૬૪ મા System/360 નામના કોમપ્યુટરો માર્કેટમા મૂક્યા અને Word processing ની પણ શરૂઆત કરી.
૧૯૬૫ મા Gemini space flights માટે ૫૯ પાઉંડ વજનના IBM guidance computer બનાવ્યા.
૧૯૬૬ મા Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) બનાવી કોમપ્યુઅટરોની દુનિયા બદલી નાખી. આજે પણ આપણે એના જ આધુનિક સ્વરૂપ વાપરીએ છીએ.
૧૯૬૯ મા Magnetic stripe cards બનાવી ક્રેડીટ કાર્ડની શરૂઆત કરાવી દીધી. એ જ વર્ષે પ્રથમ માનવી એ ચંદ્રની ધરતી પર પગ મૂક્યો, એ IBM ના કોમપ્યુટર વગર શક્ય ન થાત.
૧૯૭૧ મા કંપનીને Speech recognition કરે એવા કોમપ્યુટરમા ૫૦૦૦ શબ્દો સમજી શકે એવા કોમપ્યુટર બનાવવામા સફળતા મળી. આ વર્ષમા જ ફ્લોપી ડીસ્ક બનાવીને હરણફાળ ભરી, અને ત્યારબાદ તરત જ Winchester ડીસ્ક બનાવી એક ડગલું આગળ વધ્યા.
૧૯૭૩ મા IBM's 3660 supermarket checkout station બનાવીને બારકોડ વાંચી બિલ બનાવતા કોમપ્યુટર બનાવી વેપારની રીત જ બદલી નાખી. આ ઉપરાંત IBM 3614 બનાવી ATM શરૂ કરી બેન્કીંગ પધ્ધતિ બદલી નાખી. અને ત્યારબાદ તરત જ Winchester ડીસ્ક બનાવી જે ૧૯૯૩ સુધી મેઈન ફ્રેમ કોમપ્યુટરો વપરાતી.
૧૨મી ઓગસ્ટ ૧૯૮૧, IBM PC નો જન્મ-દિવસ. માત્ર ૧૨૮ KB મેમરીવાળા આ મશીને દુનિયાને ગાંડી બનાવી દીધી. ૧૫૬૫ ડોલરમા સામાન્ય લોકો કોમપ્યુટરના માલિક બની શકતા. બે ફ્લોપી ડિસ્ક, એક બ્લેક એન્ડ વાઈટ મોનિટર અને VisiCalc spreadsheet સોફ્ટ્વેર મફત!! માંગ એટલી વધારે હતી કે કંપનીએ Microsoft અને Intel ને મશીન બનાવવાનું કામ સોંપ્યું. બસ આ એક ભૂલ થઈ ગઈ, કરોડો ડોલરના દુપ્લીકેટ PC બજારમા આવી ગયા.
૧૯૮૮ મા Prodigy નામનું PC પણ બજારમા ઠીક ચાલ્યું. દરમ્યાનમા ત્રણ ચાર કોમપ્યુટરો એક જ પ્રિન્ટર વાપરે, એક બીજામાંથી ડેટા લઈ શકે એવી નેટવર્કનો પણ સફળ પ્રયોગ થયો.
PC ની શોધ કરીને IBM એ પોતાનું નુકશાન કર્યું. લાખો લોકોના હાથમા પોતાનું કોમપ્યુટર આવી જવાથી કંપનીના મેઈનફ્રેમ કોમપ્યુટરોની ડીમાન્ડ ઘટી ગઈ. અહીં PC ની બજારમા મોટી મોટી કંપનીઓ હરીફાઈમા આવી ગઈ. Intel એ microprocessors ની બજાર પર કબ્જો જમાવ્યો તો Microsoft એ સોફટવેર પર, HP એ પ્રિન્ટર પર કબ્જો જમાવ્યો તો Seagate એ disk drives પર. Compaq અને Dell એ તો મોટા પાયે PC બજારમા IBM સાથે હરિફાઈ શરૂ કરી દિધી.
૧૯૮૫ મા કંપનીએ પોતાનું ધ્યાન ફરી એકવાર મેઈનફ્રેમ કોમપ્યુટરો તરફ વાળ્યું. RP3 નામનું Parallel Processor વાળું મશીન બનાવ્યું. આમા એક સાથે ૫૧૨ પ્રોસેસર કામ કરતા. આ એક સુપર કોમપ્યુટર હતું.
૧૯૮૮ મા IBM AS/400 બજારમા આવ્યું. આ નાની ઓફીસો અને નાના ધંધાવાળા માટે ખૂબ ઉપયોગી સાબિત થયું.
૧૯૯૦ મા પહેલીવાર CMOS processor બનાવી કંપનીએ વિશ્વનું સૌથી શક્તિશાળી મેઈનફ્રેમ બજારમા મૂક્યું. આ કોમપ્યુટરને RISC System/6000 નામ આપ્યું.
૧૯૯૨ મા Thinkpad નામનું notebook computer બજારમા મૂક્યું જે આજ સુધી લોકો વાપરે છે. આ શોધ માટે કંપનીને ૩૦૦ થી વધારે awards મળેલા.
૧૯૯૪ મા IBM RAMAC તૈયાર કર્યું. બજારમા મૂક્યા પછી ત્રણ મહિનામા ૨૦૦૦ નંગ વેચાઈ ગયા. એ જ વરસે કી બોર્ડને બદલે બોલીને કમાન્ડ આપી શકાય એવી ટેકનોલોજી વિકસાવી જેનો ઉપયોગ નાના મોટા બધા કોમપ્યુટરમા થઈ શકે, ૧૯૯૭ સુધીમા આ ટેકનોલોજીને ખૂબ વિકસાવી.
૧૯૯૭ મા IBM એ Deep Blue નામનું કોમપ્યુટર બનાવ્યું જેણે એ વખતના દુનિયાના ચેંપિયન ચેસ પ્લેયર ગેરી કાસ્પોરોવને હરાવી દીધો.
૧૯૯૮ મા CMOS Gigaprocessor ની શોધ કરી ને એક સેકંડમા એક અબજ સાઈકલની સ્પીડથી કામ કરતું.
૧૯૯૯ મા એક કરોડ ડોલરના ખર્ચે Blue Gene ડેવલપ કર્યું. અત્યાર સુધીના એમના સૌથી ઝડપી કોમપ્યુટર કરતાં ૫૦૦ ગણી વધારે ઝડપ ધરાવતું હતું.
૨૦૦૦ મા IBM ASCI White નામનું સુપર કોમપ્યુટર બનાવ્યું, એ એટલું ઝડપી હતું કે એક મિનીટમાં દુનિયાની પ્રત્યેક વ્યક્તિને ઈંટરનેટથી સંદેશો આપી શકે. Deep Blue કરતાં એ ૧૦૦૦ ગણું ઝડપી હતું.
૨૦૦૩ મા BLUE GENE ની સાઈઝ ૧૨૮ મા ભાગની કરી નાખી, પણ એની તાકાતમા કોઈપણ ઘટાડો ન થયો. એને Blue Gene/L નામ આપ્યું.
૨૦૦૫ મા IBM એ PC અને Thinkpad બનાવવાના રાઈટસ ચાઈનીઝ કંપની Lenovo ને વેચી નાખ્યા.
૨૦૦૬ મા speech-to-speech translation system તૈયાર કરી સેનાને સોંપી.
છેલ્લા પાંચ વરસથી કંપની Restructuring મા લાગી છે. ગમે તે ઘડીએ કોઈ Path Breaking શોધના સમાચાર આવે.

Google translation facility was offered for only one Indian language..Hindi, but today Google has added five more Indian languages in Google Translation, means through Google Translation, apart from Hindi, you will be able to translate Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu to 63 languages and vice versa. Indic language translation is not easy as in the case of other languages because of the different sentence structures and grammatical challenges. The research work to improve Japanese, which follows nearly similar Subject Object Verb (SOV) structure of indic languages helped Google to formulate the translation script. If you have installed Google Toolbar, and  if the “Translation” button enabled then it will detect the language of your web page automatically and will be translated to desired language.

Google apps together with google docs provides most of what you’ll ever need for sharing documents. I personally use these tools only occasionally, except for gmail where I can sync many account into a single one.

Basecamp

Basecamp is another web application by 37signals. You can use basecamp to keep track of your projects and things to do. If your requirements are simple you can probably use pen and paper, otherwise this is an excellent program. I am personally not using basecamp anymore, as my requirements are very specific and I don’t have a team to manage.
